City of Lansing in partnership with the Greater Lansing Housing Coalition (GLHC) provides programs that allow low and moderate income households to buy their own home.

The City provides funding and technical assistance in support of the Rehabilitation Purchase Program. It helps GLHC acquire vacant residential structures that are rehabilitated and sold to income eligible families.

For information on the Program or the availability of renovated homes available for sale call GLHC at (517) 5980.

Serving Homeless Mentally Ill People

The Coalition’s mission is affordable housing, but this is our first venture to help people, whose constant struggles are virtually invisible to most of us. We expect to learn a lot from the two mental health service providers that we are fortunate to have as partners.

The Financial Details

HUD has awarded a permanent Supportive Housing Grant to the Greater Lansing Housing Coalition (GLHC) in partnership with the Justice in Mental Health Organization (JIMHO) and Community Mental Health (CMH) of Clinton, Eaton and Ingham Counties to provide permanent housing for individual adults with serious mental illnesses who are homeless.

The nine one-bedroom apartments are administered by GLHC with supportive services provided by JMHO and CMH/Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS).

The funding is provided through the City of Lansing with the Supportive Housing Grant from HUD, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) with HOME funds and low income housing tax credits syndicated by the Great Lakes Capital Fund.

* Total project cost: $1,165,000.

* Completion date: June 1, 2004

* The General Contractor was Metro Development Corp.

The Apartments and Amenities

Rents start at $175 per month, which is affordable for the homeless people referred by CMH/AMHS. This low rent is possible because of the Supportive Housing Grant.

Judy Orta
JIMHO Housing Coordinator

The apartments are approximately 500 square feet, laundry is available on each floor and all 3 apartments on the first floor are wheel chair accessible.

The JIMHO Housing Coordinator provides all follow up with the tenants, which will include weekly monitoring of the individual's progress, plus daily availability for crisis management and regular contacts with the CMH/AMHS case manager.
